John McCutcheon was an Ayrshire-born painter in oil and watercolour. He attended the Glasgow School of Art between 1929 and 1933. According to McEwan (Dictionary of Scottish Art & Architecture), he was influenced by some of the French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists including Pissaro, Sisley, Monet and Cezanne and the subject work clearly shows these influences. He exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1963, Royal Glasgow Institute and Royal Institute of Oil Painters (of which he was elected a member in 1970).
